‘Mechanic Village for Ondo city’

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), has assured members of the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA) in Ondo East and West Local Governments that his administration would construct a Mechanic Village.

Akeredolu made this known during a meeting with members of the association held at the Oba Adesanoye Civic Centre, Ondo City, yesterday.

He appealed to them to be prepared to relocate to the Village to ensure that government’s efforts and investment will not amount to a waste after its completion.

Akeredolu who commended them for their impressive turnout also urged the Automobile Technicians to go for further training in order to improve competency at their job.

He explained the importance of training and urged them to be ready to go for it for the acquisition of more skills.

The governor advised them to join cooperatives in order to be able to access funds from micro credit agency of the state government.

He further urged them to vote massively for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the forthcoming general elections in order to return President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor also admonished the artisans who trooped out in their thousands, to join cooperative societies which will enable them to easily access government loans through the state Micro-Credit Agency to boost their wives’ trades.

Earlier, State Chairman of NATA, Comrade Babatunde Shobande assured Governor Akeredolu and all APC candidates of the association’s total support during the forthcoming general election.

While promising that their support for the Akeredolu-led administration would not diminish, he appealed for a Mechanic Village for members of the association in Ondo East and West Local Governments who are forced out of their workshops by land owners.

Also, member representing Ondo Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Sen Tayo Alasoadura appreciated the NATA members for closing up their workshops to honour them.

The lawmaker however urged the technicians to troop out enmasse and vote for all candidates of APC and also to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari is re-elected.

China Bans The Sale Of Iphone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus And X

QUALCOMM VS APPLE

Following the long and harsh fight in court between Apple and Qualcomm, the Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court in China court ruled in favor of Qualcomm. This decision is regarding two patent infringement claims by Qualcomm, a US chipmaker. The decision has successfully prohibited all importation and sales of iPhone smartphones such as the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X in China. As you probably are aware, this decision is a big blow to Apple since China is the world's biggest phone market.

Anyway Apple has promised to appeal the judgment. The relationship between the two organizations has damaged beyond repair as both tech mammoths are at loggerheads over licensing rates Qualcomm and other wireless intellectual property (IP) holders charge smartphone OEMs for use of their standard essential patents (SEPs).

This implies Apple infringed two Qualcomm licenses identified with resizing photographs and arranging applications. General counsel for Qualcomm Don Rosenberg told Reuters in an announcement “Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us.”

However, reacting to the judgement, Apple says
“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world,” Apple said in a statement to CNBC.

“All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China. Qualcomm is asserting three patents they had never raised before, including one which has already been invalidated. We will pursue all our legal options through the courts.”

How Qualcomm is also fighting to block the sales of the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X in the United States and a final judgement is expected in January next year.

TECNO releases first full-screen display smartphone, CAMON CM – See specs

TECNO, a premier mobile phone brand under TRANSSION HOLDINGS, has released its first frameless full-screen display smartphone – TECNO CAMON CM. The device is the latest in the CAMON Series family and reemphasises the brand’s knack for designing high-end smartphones with sophisticated cameras.

While chronicling the brand’s growth and sheer market dominance, Eric Liu, Brand Manager of TECNO Mobile, Nigeria highlighted the company’s efforts to make revolutionary smartphones that will usher smartphone enthusiasts into an era of endless possibilities on the mobile devices and exceptional photography experiences.

In his words, “the smartphone has been reinvented and OEMs globally are always on the lookout for the next big thing to talk about. At TECNO, we take pride in our ability to understand and meet our consumers’ needs, and eventually surpass their expectations.”

With the CAMON CM, TECNO has delivered a very stylish full-screen display smartphone. The fullview display device produces an immersive experience when consuming videos, reading books, capturing images or even surfing the Internet.

The frameless device simplifies multi-tasking and offers users an opportunity to split their screen (18:9 screen support single window 1:1 split-screen operating with only one step), so that they can handle more than one task while still being able to see more on either of the split windows.

Though it is a common belief that full-view display screens are more susceptible to damage. However, on the CAMON CM, that idea has been negotiated with a 2.5D corning third glass, which does not only ensure that users enjoy better visual effects from the screen but also safeguards it from cracks and delivers smoother touching.

“In accordance to consumers’ preferences, we are gradually becoming camera driven and this trend is evident in the camera-centric designs of our smartphones.

Adopting our strategy of ‘think globally, act locally’, we are able to understand our consumers’ preferences and provide them with every support necessary to ensure that they can express themselves wholeheartedly,” Eric added.

Speaking about the exclusive sales and partnership with TECNO Mobile, the Managing Director of 3C Hub Mr. Xia Song stated, “we are excited about our partnership with TECNO and the opportunity to launch the CAMON CM with them. As always, we always strive to deliver superior smartphone retail services to end-users thus, signing an exclusive partnership for the launch of the CAMON CM is a big deal for us.”

Selfies have just gotten a jig with the CAMON CM’s 13MP front camera module that delivers exceptional HDR portrait with night shot algorithm that lifts weak light, reduces noise in single frame and captures clearer night shots. Users can adjust the super bright flash of the front camera by pressing the screen to introduce just the right amount of light required to produce a stunning photo.

Similarly, the rear camera dons the same camera rating and its 4-LED ring flash is optimized to fill light till it reaches a more balanced light filling before producing any shot.

With 3 colors of city blue, midnight black and champagne gold, booking of the CAMON CM will run from January 10–14 while, first sales will follow between January 15–20 at 8 selected 3C Hubs across the country.

The designated outlets – Ikeja, Apapa, Mushin, Owerri, Artillery 2, Umuahia, Abuja and Enugu will service early bird consumers and reward them with exclusive Manchester City gift bags.
The device will retail for N47,000 in Nigeria.

Twitter explains why it won’t ban Trump

Twitter has stated it will not remove Donald Trump’s account despite his provocative tweets.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened North Korea with nuclear war, telling its President, Kim Jong Un “that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”

His statement was in reaction to Kim Jong Un’s comments in a livebroadcast
by North Korea state TV.

“The US should know that the button for nuclear weapons is on my desk. This is not blackmail but reality,” he said.
“The entire area of the US mainland is within our nuclear strike range.

“The US can never start a war against me and our country. These weapons will be used only if our security is threatened,” he said.

Amid the ensuring uproar, which included members of Congress calling for more authority over the President’s ability to launch nuclear strikes, Twitter was again called upon to prohibit violent or abusive speech with messages that could fuel international conflict.

In a post entitled “World Leaders on Twitter,” the site said “Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and debate”.

“It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions,” the post said.

Popular Chat, Whatsapp To Enable Users ‘Unsend’ Chat, Fixes Other Bugs

For some time now, there has been reportedly been calls and petitions to Whatsapp management pertaining the missed call notification on it’s mobile app when the phone did not actually ring and also voice lags or voice break during Whatsapp call which is probably caused by poor internet connectivity.

Additional, due to the network connectivity in Nigeria, one can’t the internet connection status or stability as it is been recommend that 3G, 4G or Wifi internet connection should be used during especially both voice and video calling.

Though, as at the time of writing this post, Whatsapp hasn’t yet imposed these modification, but trust the required test running on these new features, meanwhile let’s have a glimpse of Whatsapp latest update pertaining these glitches.
Whatsapp “Live Location” Feature

Few days ago, Whatsapp announced that users will be able to share the location with friends and family in real time. If you’ve used the sharing feature before, you know we could already share locations before, except it was static. With this one though, you’ll be able to share it in real time, almost like a Google Map of chat.

This is how it will work — open a chat with the person or group you want to share with. Go to Location, from the attach B.utton. The attach options will have “Share Live Location”. When you select it, you can even choose for how long you intend to share location with the other person. Then hit send. If more than one person shares their Live Location in the group, all locations will be visible on the same map.

Note that this is an end to those times you lie to your friends that you’re in a particular location when you’re somewhere else. It won’t end well when they request you share your location.

Whatsapp’s “Unsend Chat Message” Feature

As already stated, Whatsapp is currently testing an ‘unsend’ feature which will help users to get rid of messages sent either by a mistake or deliberately. With the Delete for Everyone’ feature, those messages you send angrily or when not in good state of mind can be deleted from your Whatsapp Chat Window using ‘unsend’ B.utton.
According to WABetaInfo, experimenting with the new feature on Android and iOS devices. The feature is said to be functioning successful thus far.
‘Recall’ or ‘unsend’ message feature have been in many social apps like WeChat and Viber.
Note: Chats can only be deleted withing 5 minutes after it’s sent and if it hasn’t been read by the recipient.
Additional tech gossip

In Zimbabwe, it’s now a crime to create a Whatsapp group without registering with the government.
Zimbabwe has now made it illegal to create a Whatsapp group without registration and approval from its ministry of cyber security. The ministry released a statement to that effect with the rules to take effect starting November 1, 2017.

Why ATM malfunctions – Expert

An economic expert, Prof. Uche Uwaleke, has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to remove old and dirty notes from circulation.
Uwaleke, an Associate Professor of Banking at the Nasarawa State University, said such notes were causing constant malfunctioning of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), especially during pressure periods.

He said this in an interview on Sunday in Abuja.
NAN had reported in a national survey on challenges faced by bank customers in cash withdrawal at festive periods, that hundreds of Nigerians complained of machine failure, slowness and long queues.

These happened at a time when people were eager to withdraw their savings to celebrate, many of them left frustrated due to the challenges.
Many of the banks in some states do not have enough ATM machines to cater to the needs of the people and the ones available break down when they are put on constant use.

To proffer solution to these, Uwaleke urged the CBN to ensure that banks did not use worn-out notes in the ATMs.

“Abroad, the ATMs are used to dispense new ‘mint’ notes, so when you use dirty notes, the machine finds it difficult to recognise it or even dispense it.
“The money in the ATM is what these banks get from the CBN and you will agree with me that most notes in circulation today are dirty and old.
“As a customer, when you complain about the condition of the bank notes, the banks will just tell you that is what they have.

“So CBN should try and ensure that dirty notes are withdrawn from circulation and replaced with new ones, especially during festive periods,” he said.
Uwaleke said also that the banks should be made to provide more ATMs around the country because no matter how good the machines were, they would be ineffective when put under too much pressure.

“Banks should be made to provide more ATMs. ATMs are bound to break down when it is put under pressure. It’s just like using your generator 24 hours non-stop.

“When more ATMs are made available, they will help to reduce the long queues normally experienced during festive periods and also serve to ease pressure on a particular ATM so that it doesn’t get overworked.

“Banks should also make sure that there is staff readily available at any point in time to attend to issues arising from the breakdown of these machines.

“I know some banks dedicate workers during these periods and even on weekends but not all of them. Banks should be encouraged to do more,” he said.
Uwaleke also advised the CBN to continue to sensitise the public to cashless policy and use of electronic payment methods.

“We must not buy all our things using cash and that is why we have long queues. The idea of using POS should be encouraged.

“CBN should continue to enlighten people on the importance of using POS during these period so that even if you are to withdraw cash, it’s just little that you need.

“Let the bulk of your purchase be done electronically. If all these are done, we won’t be having much of these complaints again,” he said.

Google cancels diversity debate Town Hall

Google Thursday cancelled a Town Hall intended to air viewpoints on diversity, sexism and free speech , citing worker safety concerns .

“We’ ll find a better way to help our employees connect and discuss these important issues further ,” a Google spokesperson said in response to an AFP inquiry .

The employee gathering was scheduled to air viewpoints swirling in after the dismissal of a Google engineer over a memo defending the Silicon Valley gender gap .

The “manifesto” published as an internal memo by James Damore claimed “ biological differences” were a key factor in the low percentage of women in technology jobs and sparked outcry from those claiming it perpetuated stereotypes and discrimination .

Then Damore was fired — according to media reports and his own email to the far - right news website Breitbart — which ignited backlash from those claiming Google was stifling free speech and politically conservative viewpoints .

News of the Town Hall cancelation was sent to employees in a memo from chief executive Sundar Pichai , who apologized to them for giving late notice.

Questions being posed internally by “Googlers ,” along with some of their names , began appearing on outside websites , prompting safety concerns , according to a copy of the memo obtained by AFP .

“We had hoped to have a frank , open discussion today as we always do to bring us together and move forward ,” Pichai said in the memo.

“Googlers are writing in , concerned about their safety and worried they may be ‘ outed’ publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall . ”

He said Google intends a series of internal forums in coming days to give people chances to speak freely without fear .

Pichai said that he has met with many people at Google about the controversy , with the vast majority supporting the decision to fire the author of the manifesto.

The company has not officially identified the engineer at issue , citing employee privacy.

The fresh controversy comes with Silicon Valley struggling in the face of accusations of rampant sexual harassment and discrimination affecting startups like Uber and venture capital firms investing in the sector .

Earlier this week , Pichai said employees have a right to express themselves but that the memo appeared to “cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace . ”

“To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK,” Pichai said in his email to employees .

Damore’ s firing made him a hero to the far right and those claiming political correctness has gone too far .

Google fires defender of tech gender gap

Google on Monday fired the author of an internal memo defending the gender- gap in Silicon Valley tech jobs as a matter of biology , according to media reports.

The move, which was not officially confirmed by Google, splashed fuel on a burning controversy about whether “political correctness” at the company was stifling free speech .

Google told AFP that the company “ can’ t comment on individual employee cases . ”

In an email to employees, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai supported the right of employees to express themselves, saying that much of what was in the memo is fair to debate, according to a copy of the message obtained by AFP .

“However, portions of the memo violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace, ” Pichai said in the email.

“To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK. ”

Pichai noted that the company code of conduct calls for ‘Googlers ’ to do their utmost to create “a culture free of harassment , intimidation, bias and unlawful discrimination . ”

However, Pichai defended the author ’s right to criticize Google training , workplace ideology , and whether programs promoting workplace diversity are adequately open to all .

“The author had a right to express their views on those topics ,” Pichai said.

“We encourage an environment in which people can do this and it remains our policy to not take action against anyone for prompting these discussions. ”

Recode, Bloomberg and other media outlets on Monday reported that the author of the controversial internal document was fired.

– Martyr or sexist? –
The news became a hot topic at Twitter , with some calling the employee a martyr and railing against Google for punishing him for expressing a view that went against Silicon Valley ’s efforts to promote diversity at tech companies .

The leaked internal document that triggered the controversy claimed “biological causes” explained the lack of women in tech industry leadership roles.
The screed — dubbed “sexist ” by US media — went viral, reviving the simmering debate over a culture of sexism and lack of diversity in tech sectors.

“I’ m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don ’ t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership ,” read the 3 , 000 - word fulmination.

According to the author , natural aptitudes of men allow them to become better computer programmers , while women have more “openness directed towards feelings and aesthetics rather than ideas ” — meaning they “prefer jobs in social or artistic areas . ”

In response to the leaked memo , Danielle Brown , Goole’ s new vice president of diversity, told employees in an email that “it’s not a viewpoint that I or this company endorses , promotes or encourages . ”

“I found that it advanced incorrect assumptions about gender. ” she said.

The controversy comes as increasing numbers of women are going public with complaints of gender- based discrimination in Silicon Valley .

Currently some 69 percent of Google’s employees are men, according to the company’s latest figures, a proportion that rises to 80 percent when it comes to technology jobs .

In 2016 at Facebook just 27 percent of senior executives were women . At Apple, around 30 percent of total employees are women .

Five common Twitter scams to avoid

Created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams and launched in July of that year , Twitter is today one of the world ’s most popular social media networks. The micro- blogging service was one of the 10 most- visited websites in 2013 and has been described as “the SMS of the Internet . ” As of 2016 , Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users , with the figure expected to rise as mobile penetration deepens in previously under - served regions across the globe.

The growing popularity of the medium and the numerous revenue - generating opportunities it offers to users has seen scammers and other con artists come up with unscrupulous means to compromise the accounts of unsuspecting users and / or swindle them of their hard -earned money .
In this piece , the Research and Development Unit of Yudala, sheds some light on the most common Twitter scams to avoid.

- Pay- for - new- followers scam
In addition to individuals caught in the vanity trap of acquiring more followers to shore up their social media image , a number of corporate organisations have also fallen prey to this particular scam . In most cases , the perpetrators of this phoney scheme succeed in tricking the user to sign up for a service that is guaranteed to deliver loads of new followers for a fee. Victims of this scam are often won over by the bogus promises of the scammers who claim to possess databases of millions of Twitter users with the right interests who can be targeted and converted to new followers by the subscriber . In other cases , they claim to be able to identify other Twitter users who automatically follow anyone who follows them.

Apart from the financial losses that come from falling prey to this scam , you or your organisation may also end up being accused or reported for spamming other users and eventually have your account suspended from Twitter.

- Work - from - home schemes
With the growing popularity of the micro -blogging service , a number of new revenue -generating streams have emerged on Twitter . Users who have managed to build up a huge follower base have risen to the status of influencers, often patronised by brands and other advertisers to endorse their products with targeted tweets often for an agreed fee . Riding on this , a very common Twitter scam , offering users an opportunity to make money from home by tweeting about other people ’s products , has also become popular. Research shows that most gullible victims are often asked to part with some money as sign - up fee to get a starter kit for the service . This involves parting with a credit card number , which the fraudsters keep charging a hidden membership fee from on a monthly basis. This scam goes on until the exasperated user wises up to the game and cancels the credit card .

Twitter phishing scam
Phishing refers to the activity of tricking people by getting them to give their identity , bank account numbers and other sensitive information over the Internet or by email and then using these to steal money from them . Ever come across a link on Twitter , which re-directs you to a legitimate- looking site that requires you to supply personal information? You may just be about to become a victim of one of the most sophisticated Twitter phishing scams . By forging emails from legitimate sites such as banks , e - commerce sites, airline companies , educational institutions , etc. , phishing scammers lure users into disclosing personal details such as name , credit card details, password, among others.

Fake Direct Messages ( DMs )
Direct messages are communications or posts sent privately to another Twitter user while signed on to the platform . Scammers have been known to rely on sending fake DMs as a means of gaining access to or compromising the accounts of other users . This occurs when scammers use a hijacked account to send out seemingly innocuous direct messages . In most reported cases , the messages include links which re- direct users to fake login pages requiring the supply of credentials or login details. Once a user falls victim and provides the required details , the compromised account is taken over by the scammer who can then use it for a number of nefarious purposes . Fake direct messages are also used by other fraudsters whose interests go beyond compromising users ’ accounts to actually swindling them of money and other valuables often by offering phantom oil blocs and other incredible investments or preying on elderly ladies in what is popularly known in these parts as 419 scams .

Twitter viruses and spyware
This is another less popular means of hijacking the accounts of Twitter users. In most cases , the scam originates from tempting messages or erotic pictures sent by faceless accounts followed by a link . Once a user clicks on the link , it immediately re - directs to a site from which malicious software is uploaded onto your computer or device. A few cases have also been reported of messages that originated from a regular follower , a friend or relative whose accounts have been hijacked and used to trap their unsuspecting contacts . Another variant of this particular scam is the sending out of messages offering access to a programme that, when installed , could let you know who has been checking out your Twitter profile or who has unfollowed you . Once downloaded , the user inadvertently installs spyware which grants unauthorised access to his/ her account .
