ASUU SLAMS ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT OVER NON-IMPLEMENTATION OF 2025 FGN–ASUU AGREEMENT

 ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES

(ASUU) AKURE ZONE

TEXT OF PRESS CONFERENCE HELD ON 1ST JULY 2026 AT UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, ONDO

ASUU CONDEMNS ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT'S CONTINUED FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT THE 2025 FGN–ASUU AGREEMENT

Gentlemen of Press,

ASUU wishes to bring to your notice the continued failure of the Ondo State Government to implement the provisions of the 2025 FGN–ASUU Agreement. Regrettably, despite receiving the agreement and being fully apprised of its obligations thereunder, the Ondo State Government has continued to actively ignore its provisions. This persistent inaction has adversely affected the welfare of our members and continues to undermine the effective functioning of the state-owned university systems. It is against this backdrop that ASUU considers it necessary to inform ALL Comrades, Stakeholders in the Education Sector, Parents, Students, Civil Society Organizations, and the General Public of Ondo State Government's continued failure to honourits obligations and to call for the immediate and faithful implementation of the 2025 agreement, in the interest of the University community and the advancement of quality higher education in Ondo State.

The 2025 FGN–ASUU Agreement occupies a significant place in the history of university education in Nigeria. It is the first major agreement reached between the Federal Government of Nigeria and ASUU since the historic 2009 FGN–ASUU Agreement. Coming 16 years after the last comprehensive agreement, the 2025 Agreement was expected to usher in renewed hope for lecturers and strengthen universities' capacity to fulfil their mandates for teaching, research, and community service.

The financial components of the Agreement took effect on January 1, 2026. The key financial provisions include:

1. Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA);
2. Earned Academic Allowance (EAA); and
3. Professorial Allowance.

These provisions were carefully negotiated to improve staff welfare, encourage academic productivity and excellence in research, and enhance the quality of university education across the country. Regrettably, six months after the effective date of implementation, the Ondo State Government has failed to adopt and implement these provisions for academic staff in the state-owned tertiary institutions. Consequently, lecturers have continued to bear the burden of denied entitlements while arrears continue to accumulate.

It is important to state that state governments possess the authority, responsibility, and financial capacity to adopt and implement the agreement. The resources required for this implementation are derived from our commonwealth and are intended to support the development of critical sectors such as education. There is therefore no justifiable reason for any state government (especially Ondo State) to delay the implementation of a nationally negotiated welfare package aimed at strengthening higher education.

Ondo State is the 5th largest oil-producing state in Nigeria, sitting right behind the primary Niger Delta oil hubs (Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa), and is officially recognized asone of the nine Niger Delta State by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The state has consistently benefited from 13% derivation fund and other federal allocations associated with its status as an oil-producing state. Ordinarily, such a privileged position should translate into enviable funding of education and staff welfare. With its ranking among Nigeria's oil-producing states and its undisputed position as the foremost oil-producing state in the South-West, one would reasonably expect Ondo State to be among the first states to spontaneously adopt and implement the 2025 FGN–ASUU Agreement. Instead, Ondo State has once again demonstrated a cold disposition towards this agreement. While neighbouring non-oil-producing states such as Ekiti State and Osun State have taken commendable steps towards implementing the 2025 FGN–ASUU Agreement, Ondo State continues to lag behind despite possessing significantly greater resource advantages. More disturbing is the constitution of a committee to review the already approved 2025 FG-ASUU Agreement.

ASUU wishes to unequivocally state that the issue at stake does not require endless deliberations, repeated consultations, or bureaucratic bottlenecks. The 2025 FGN–ASUU Agreement already exists. Its financial components are clearly defined. Its effective date is already established. What is required is implementation—not prolonged committee engagements that merely postpone government action while lecturers continue to suffer the consequences.

More troubling is the fact that this delay is not an isolated occurrence. The Ondo State Government has, over the years, developed an unfortunate reputation for delayed implementation of nationally approved welfare packages and agreements affecting university lecturers. Time and again, academic staff have had to endure prolonged waiting periods before benefiting from entitlements already approved at the national level. This recurring pattern has created avoidable industrial tensions, diminished staff morale, and weakened confidence in the government's commitment to higher education. The consequences of this persistent delay extend beyond the welfare of lecturers. They directly affect students, research productivity, institutional stability, accreditation outcomes, and the overall quality of graduates produced by our institutions. At a time when universities worldwide are competing to attract and retain the best academic talent, policies characterized by delays and neglect only encourage brain drain and undermine institutional excellence. Ondo State ought to be a destination that attracts and retains the nation's finest intellectuals, where the best minds would aspire to work rather than leave. Regrettably, the reality is exact opposite, as many highly skilled academics are compelled to seek better opportunities elsewhere due to unfavourable working conditions and inadequate support for the university system.

Education remains the most strategic investment any government can make. No society develops beyond the quality of its educational system, and no educational system can rise above the commitment shown to those who sustain it. Having three state-owned universities - University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (the first medical university in Nigeria), Adekunle AjasinUniversity, Akungba-Akoko and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okiti-pupa is a blessing, not a curse. It is an answer to ancestral cravings for excellence.

Furthermore, the implementation delay has now lasted six months. The financial obligations that should have been discharged from January 1, 2026, have accumulated into substantial arrears. Experience has consistently shown that delayed implementation transforms manageable obligations into enormous liabilities that become increasingly difficult to liquidate. The longer the government delays, the greater the financial burden it ultimately creates for itself.

ASUU cannot continue to watch while legitimate entitlements are withheld and the future of tertiary education is compromised.

Accordingly, ASUU calls on the Ondo State Government to:

1. Immediately ADOPT and IMPLEMENT the 2025 FGN–ASUU Agreement in all state-owned tertiary institutions;
2. Commence without delay the payment of all financial components of the Agreement, including CATA, EAA, and Professorial Allowance;
3. Effect a one-time payment and clearance of all arrears that have accumulated since January 1, 2026; and
4. Discontinue all unnecessary bureaucratic processes and committee-based delay tactics that serve only to postpone implementation.

Failure to act with the urgency demanded by this situation will leave ASUU with no option but to activate all lawful and legitimate actions available within the framework of a trade union to drive home its demands.

We sincerely hope that the government will choose the path of responsibility, dialogue, and prompt action. However, should the current neglect persist, responsibility for any industrial action and the consequences that may follow shall rest squarely on the shoulders of the Ondo State Government.

The future of higher education in Ondo State is too important to be sacrificed on the altar of administrative delay, committee-induced procrastination, and policy indifference.

Thank you.

In solidarity always!

ASUU Strike: Gunshots As Soldiers Disperse Protesting Ondo Students

Men of the Nigerian Army have allegedly stormed the scene where students were protesting in Akure, Ondo State on Tuesday.

The students had gone out for a second-day protest in the state over the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Videos obtained by our correspondent had shown soldiers marching in their numbers with their guns, alongside a van being driven after them. Sporadic gunshots were heard as they moved while some of the students ran in panic.

The students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, in Akure, had, alongside, counterparts from neighboring states, barricaded major highways, including the Benin-Ore Express road while they protested.

Sources told our correspondent that as of yesterday, the police and soldiers came to the protest scene, but today, they had come with violence as they started to disperse the students and disrupt other things.

“What happened in Lekki is happening again in Ondo!” One of the protesters had screamed in another video which showed that the instruments of the protests being used by the students had been scattered.

“They’re killing us,” another person said.

The PUNCH reported that last week, in Ibadan, men of the Nigerian army had also attempted to run over protesting students around the University of Ibadan. This was condemned in a statement by the ASUU, Lagos zone.

For over a week, students had protested across Nigeria over the ASUU strike, calling on the Federal Government to accede to the demands of the striking lecturers.

The PUNCH reports that the ASUU strike, which began on February 14, has entered 92 days.

ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT AND THEIR LACKADAISICAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS YOUTHS AND STUDENTS

Until the Control of the issue of Credit is restored  back to a Government Administration and recognized as its most Conspicuous and sacred Responsibility, all talks of the Sovereignty of Parliament and of Democracy is idle and Futile. We can't shy from the fact that State Government have an Absolute Sovereignty and when the Government failed to Comply with his Fundamental Duties in ensuring that Life and Properties of its Citizens is highly Saved. It will be regard as a Failed Government.

Ondo State Government have just proven to the entire Country that, they don't have any Feelings for the Lives of it's Citizens either at the State Level or outside. Recently a gruesome Killing occurred in Rukuba Jos North, Plateau State where some innocent souls mainly Numbered to 25 Religious Worshipper mainly Youths were Masarcre and very Gory. The ambushed which occured while the victims were coming from Bauchi where they join Other Muslims Religious Worshippers in Celebration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Birthday. Our source gathered that those Victims involved are Ondo State in Indigenes. In which many reactions engulfed from all nooks and crannies and this same killing eventually leads to a Curfew in the State in order to restore Peace and Order in the State.

On same Scenario, have eventually make some Higher Institutions to halt  ongoing Examinations in their various Campuses in the State.

Since Last week some States have been sending Government Officials down to Plateau State to evacuate all their  Indigenes back to their various States. Ondo State which was affected weren't moved with an inched, despite the Tension in the whole Country. No single Press Release was Published in any National Daily Newspaper talkless of Holding Brief Conference to kick against the Gruesome Killing. What a Shame to the Government.

Before putting this article up, our Source here in Jos have Gotten in Touch with some of the Principals Officers in Ondo State to demand why their Indigenes who are schooling in Plateau State have been neglected while other States have done Fast Response. Here are the Principal Officers who our Source get in touch with.

The Chief Press Secretary to Ondo State Government

Commissioner of Information Ondo State

Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Students Matters to The State Governor.

We all understood, that the Governor can never be in everywhere, that is the main reason whereby Government Functionaries have been appointed and represent Mr. Governor in different Areas depending on the Designation been given onto.

But, on this kind of Case, the Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Students Matters to Mr. Governor is been referred to. All possiblity of Evacuating those Students were not even concerned at all. I put a call through one of the Student Leader yesterday to know the state of condition and he confidently told me that all the students were Evacuated but the SSA on Youths and Students Matters Hon. Ogunyemi Muyiwa  Ojo Eyiyato was in Absential and he have stayed back in Ondo State. God a whole so called SSA on Youths and Students Matters was not present in the Evacuation Process and also the Students were even evacuated with Ogun State Indigenes with their Buses which means no provision was made for the Students from the State. This is so Embarrassing, Dissatisfactory and Disappointing from a whole State which was the main affected State and at that period abandoned it's Indigenes. A Oil Producing State for that Matter.

I Live and Based in Jos and my Place is not far from the reported scene. I know how Forebode and Dreading the State is.

This is a total Shame and Disappointed to the Entire State for them not to able to send Government Functionaries to Evacuate those Students. This really show how Callous and Wicked the State Government is Most especially the SSA on Youths and Students. We all see other State Government like Kogi, Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti how they respond in Quick action towards the Evacuation of their Own Students through their Own SSAs on Youths and Students.

May Almighty God Forgive you all.

I Challenge Ondo State Government to Prove to me that this Article is False by Uploading this same version of Evacuation by Ondo State Delegates in Plateau State.

Sanity is next close to Serenity.

Ondo State Government haven't done well and l guess that the Ondo Youths and Students demand an Unapologetic Press Release or possibly Brief Conference most especially from the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Students Matters to Ondo State, Hon. Ogunyemi Muyiwa Ojo Eyiyato.

God Bless Ondo State!

God Bless Southwest!!

God Bless Nigeria!!!

UNIBEN Orders Peace Ufuoma To Rewrite All Exams From 200 Level

University of Benin (UNIBEN) Female Graduate probed by the school authorities for Examination malpractice ordered to rewrite all exams from 200 Level.

UNIBEN began investigating all the results of female student who wore ” Aggressive Malpractice” shirt during her sign out parade.

Earlier last week, the management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) ordered that all the results of the student be investigated after she wore a sign out shirt with the inscription “aggressive malpractice brought me this far” during her signing out parade.

This came after a video of the said student identifies as Peace Ufuoma, from the department of Microbiology, went viral a few days ago.

The institution made a statement two weeks ago on the Thursday, that the decision to probe the student in question’s results was taken at a meeting that held on the 13th of July.

A news reaching Siggy correspondent as of today says that the female student in question has been ordered to rewrite all her papers from her Level two till the end of Level four. This sounds very heartbreaking but the school management is of the opinion that Peace Ufuoma be used as a scape goat to tell every student of the University of Benin that examination malpractices are not allowed within her walls.

In all your years in service, has NANS ever required money of you, or can you analyzed any achievement you've made towards the Welfarism of Nigerian Student, you being full of biasment, sentimental towards your district people even have separate people you wished to allocate your promised bursary to as you reference in your reply towards our earlier article towards you, your judgmental statement which reads;

"Borofice has made provision for Bursary to the students AND LIST OF BENEFICIARIES is currently being compiled across local governments in the district"

This shows that you never have any concern for the welfarism of Nigerian Student if not for political career, such your personality did not worth being in position of authority and we will forever be a pressure unless our demands is heard, tend and recon to.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone D, received with delight, the new of the arrival of about 4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine into the country on Tuesday, march 2, 2021.

Meanwhile, as the vaccination campaign and administration in Nigeria begin, it is imperative to make a passionate plea to the Federal Government, on behalf of the entire Nigerian students, that the students should be considered first in the administration of the vaccine.

In particular, as the States Governors are warming up to receive their shares of the vaccine, NANS (Zone D), is requesting that the governors of the South/West should place premium on the students at all levels in the administration of the vaccine.

The need to start the vaccination with the students is imperative because Nigerian students constitute the largest assemblage among whom the virus can easily spread, thus, the vaccine must be administered on them first in order to contain the spread of the dreaded virus.

We are urging our governors in the South/West States, to put some compelling measures in place in our Primary Health Care centres, higher institutions and schools and other prospective designated centres to ensure that students are given priority in the administration of the vaccine.

While we are congratulating the government on the arrival of the vaccine, we want to pledge our support in terms of campaign for the vaccination which will help to contain the spread of the virus.

Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta.

Signed:

Kowe Odunayo Amos.
