Oodua Youth Coalition(OYC) is saddened with the unfortunate news of the pipeline explosion that claimed over 17 lives and injured many in Abule Ado, Festac Town of Amuwo Odofin in Lagos State yesterday. OYC commiserates with the bereaved, those whose loved ones were injured and the many who lost properties.
While we believe that God gives and He takes when the time comes, we also believe that the unfortunate incident could have been avoided if all stakeholders take responsibility.
The time has come for the government to make a public listing of all gas and oil pipelines in the country. This, we believe, will discourage prospective building owners to acquire landed properties around these pipelines. It will also dissuade people from taking up accommodation in these locations.
Furthermore, the government must recheck property allocations around pipelines across the country, stop giving out new approvals and order relocation of the ones presently occupying these areas.
However, constant and consistent pipeline maintenance should top the priority of those in charge. If you cannot do your work convincingly, heads should roll, especially on this latest explosion.
OYC will continue to seek for the good and wellbeing of the people in our land. We pray these evils befalling us shall come to an end, yet all hands must be on deck to prevent recurrence.
