COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF ALL AKOKO YOUTH CONGRESS

THE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF A UNITY CONGRESS OF ALL AKOKO YOUTH GROUPS HELD IN AKUNGBA AKOKO ON THE 31ST OF AUGUST, 2018.

PREAMBLE

Youth leaders and stakeholders in Akoko converged in a peaceful gathering at the Oroke High School, Akungba Akoko to discuss the way forward on the lack of a united front in the youth forum in Akoko and the future of Akoko as a nation. The congress was attended by various youth groups and opinion leaders.

After an exhaustive reflections and submissions by youths of the largest community in Ondo State, the following communiqué was unanimously agreed upon.

The congress lamented the duplication of youth groups and its effect on the development of the area. The congress men regretted the long silence of opinion leaders on the impotency of a particular youth group, which has been in existence for over 10 years and has only been successful in pledging allegiance to a particular politician and one prominent son of the land. The group, which was said to have been registered by some few self-selected individuals in the area, has upset several youth leaders who have consequently defected to create other groups.

The congress men quoted that a gathering like this was long overdue and appreciated the convener as well as the transition committee for the uncompromised effort. The congress men were convinced that with all other groups ready to form a coalition with a well structured platform, the youths can now have a united voice devoid of political and religious sentiments.

The congress resolved as follows:
1. That Akoko youths insist on a singular and united platform with a well defined aims and objectives embedded in a jointly reviewed constitution.

2. That the greatest imperatives of a united Akoko youth platform is to move from a self centered and money sharing anti-development platform to productivity by ensuring that the platform is well represented at the grassroot.

3. That the platform should be named AKOKO YOUTH ALLIANCE to reflect the foundation and agreements between the various youth groups.

4. That the slogan of the group be UNITY IN DIVERSITY to reflect the diversity in culture and languages in the community and the deep understanding manifested by the various communities for development.

5. That the platform must be structured as follows:
 a. Central working committee
 b. Local government committee
 c. Ward working committee
 d. Advisory committee
 e. Board of trustee

6. That the constitution should be reviewed to separate the functions of the various committee and should be made available at the next congress for a final review and adaptation.

7. That a contact and feedback committee be set-up to further meet and negotiate with other few youth groups left out of the congress and consult the transition committee to agree on a new date for another congress.

8. That the transition committee should communicate the date of the next congress a week before the agreed date.

9. That these agreed positions of the Akoko youths taken today shall form the basis of negotiations with any other youth groups willing to join in the Akoko project based on Justice, Peace and development.
