ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT TO REVIEW HER POLITICAL PROGRAMMES AND ERASE THE THOUGHT OF TUITION FEES INCREMENT- NANS JCC ONDO AXIS

BEING THE TEXT OF THE PRESS STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS' (NANS/JCC), ONDO STATE AXIS, ON THE NEED FOR THE ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT TO REVIEW HER POLITICAL PROGRAMMES AND ERASE THE THOUGHT OF TUITION FEES INCREMENT.

Inarguably, the survival of democracy depends solidly on the literacy level of the governed; just as the most difficult thing to achieve under democratic settings is the management of the ignorant populace.

The National Association of Nigerian Students' completely describe the State government plan on increasing our institutions tuition fees as erratic, barbaric, inhuman and anti-student.
It is indeed most unfortunate and a great pity that many of our students are from parents whose meager salaries are not being paid as at when due, those whose parents are traders are not making sales let alone profit.

Undoubtedly, many of the delegates who attended the just concluded education summit expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome except if the State government want to lost his head in the diluge of sycophants who keep praising the State government just to make a mess of it.
The commonplace motives of greed, lust, revenge and fear of betrayal do not need psychic discernment for their discovery but are perceptible to the naked eye.
I am ware of the concern which our various agencies in the State have always felt for peace, orderliness, progress, a good and effective Government for our dear Sunshine State. These are basic needs which quite rightly, the people expect from the government, the absence of which breeds dissatisfaction, discontent and distrust.
We are all witnesses to the events which culminated in the recent change of leadership in the State and the steps taken by the Nigerian Students to infuse discipline in our midst and restore sanity into our tertiary institutions across the State.

The task ahead of Mr Arakunrin led administration is great and quite challenging. It requires the corporation, understanding and support of every citizen of Ondo State. The National Association of Nigerian Students will not be found wanting in this drive to give our Sunshine State a new lease of life. Now is time to rethink, reflect and to act.
If our government is trying by all means to cut cost, it shouldn't be on education, the implications for this is that; we will end up having 75% of our students dropping out of school, we will produce more miscreants in the system, we will produce doctors who can't prescribe drugs for an ulcer patient, we will produce lawyers who can't draft deeds of conveyance, we will produce political scientists who will end up raising more political temperatures in the country.
The increment will not fulfill the goals of teacher education according to the National Policy on Education 4th Edition which says;

a. produce highly motivated, conscientious and efficient class room teachers for "all levels" of our educational system;

b. encourage further the spirit of enquiry and creativity in teachers;

c. help teachers to fit into social life of the community and the society at large and enhance their commitment to national goals; and so on.

We will be denying the naked truth by saying the state government can no longer finance education when one of the Government ultimate goal is to make education free at all levels. Financing education should be a joint responsibility of the Federal, State and Local government, as well as partnership with the private sectors. We also urge the Ondo State government to welcome and encourage the participation of local communities and other progressive organizations.

The decision to increase tuition fees is prone to cause mayhem on the society giving the security implications.
The Government should grant  Nigerian students an audience to explicitly share our views on alternative sources of revenue generation and on how best to run an effective, efficient, qualitative and affordable education system without necessary breaking the back of the Government and poor masses.

I wish to implore the Government to build a bond of emphaty so we all can live in peace and safe us all a lot of embarrassment and avoidable situations.
The development of education by the ruling class needs to be of top priority in budgeting and execution to prevent riots, unhealthy rivalry and insanity in our society.

Education is a right, not a privilege.
