Residents groan under flooding as rain persists in Lagos

As the rainfall continues unabated in
Lagos, residents yesterday, lamented flooding of
their areas which has ultimately affected
vehicular movement in the state.

Mostly affected are residents of Lekki axis, who
now have to navigate through pools of water as
their roads are totally submerged by flooding.
Also experiencing flood are residents of the
reclaimed Ilubinrin, Park View and Banana
Islands said to have been submerged.

On the mainland, both sides of the Oshodi to
Anthony through Oworonsoki areas particularly
around UPS courier company where a couple was
swept away by flood a few years back are again
being threatened by massive flooding.

The rains that had continued in the past few
days, led to gridlock on the Lekki-Epe
Expressway, making vehicular movement on the
ever busy road difficult.

It was learned that the failed portions of the
roads also contribute to the flooding that has
innundated the area.

Sources said since the cancellation of the Lekki-
Epe Expressway concession by the state
government, there had not been any prompt
repairs of the road.

According to a resident, who identified himself
as Chijioke; “With all the rain falling in Lagos,
let’s channel some of this Lekki flood to the sea,”
adding that this will help mitigate the flooding
that had crippled business activities.

Another resident, Adewale Akintayo, lamented;
“Our streets have turned into p‘River Nile’ to the
extent that flood is flowing into our houses.''

“Activities of articulated trucks is another factor,
So we are appealing to the State Governor,
Akinwunmi Ambode to direct the Lagos State
Public Works Corporation, LSPWC, to do the
necessary palliative on the road.”
