In the Philippines, Catholics have carried out
brutal flagellation ceremonies using large
metal chains
And in Mexico and Spain, candlelight vigils
take place while floats are wheeled through
city centres
London's Trafalgar Square was taken over this
afternoon by 100 actors and animals performing
'The Passion of Jesus' to commemorate Good
Friday.
The Wintershall Estate Players' annual, free Good
Friday performance depicts the last hours in the
life of Jesus of Nazareth, with the hill of Calvary
erected under Nelson's column.
In Palermo, Sicily, those participating in the Way
of the Cross procession donned white and purple
pointy hats as they paraded down the street.
Also today a Filipino devotee was nailed to the
cross for the 30th time in an Easter ritual taking
place in the Pampanga province north of Manila,
in a re-enactment of Jesus Christ's death.
Ruben Enaje and several other men screamed in
pain as they were nailed to wooden crosses,
offering their sacrifice for peace in Belgium and
other countries targeted by Islamic extremists.
Thousands of foreign and local tourists gathered
to watch the ritual.
Enaje, a sign painter, says he also prayed for
peaceful Philippine presidential elections this
year and a better job.
The Good Friday ritual is opposed by religious
leaders in the Philippines, Asia's largest Roman
Catholic nation, but the event has persisted.
