OPEN LETTER ON THE PURPORTED MEETING OF ONDO STATE STUDENTS STAKEHOLDERS AND THE PLANNED RALLY TO DECLARE SUPPORT FOR ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT

I write to inform and intimate all the students bodies, stakeholders and the general public in Ondo state about the antics and perfected plans by the President of National Association of Ondo State Students(NAOSS), Emmanuel Olanrewaju Akeredolu, to trade off all Ondo state students to the state government for a pot of porridge and millions of naira.

Few days ago, Emmanuel Olanrewaju Akeredolu summoned all students stakeholders in Ondo state to a meeting to discuss the welfare and well-being of our students. According to a statement he posted and signed on his Facebook page, he confirmed inviting all SUG presidents in Ondo State to the meeting, backed by pictures. Furthermore, he hailed the present Ondo state government for the giant strides put in by the governor to uplift us and enjoined all students to support him.

This is wrong in all ramifications!

Firstly, the National President of NAOSS doesn't have the legal and moral backing to invite the Student Union Government presidents as they are all senators in the Ondo NANS JCC axis. It's unconstitutional, illegal and remains unacceptable. As the NANS chairman in Ondo state, I also do not have the legal backing to invite all the 18 chapter president of NAOSS, as it doesn't belong to my jurisdiction.

Why would the NAOSS president trespass on my territory?

More so, the Ondo State Government, led by His Excellency, Arakunrin ‘Rotimi Akeredolu, must do all in its capacity, to unite the students bodies and stakeholders in Ondo state for a smooth, unhindered growth and development of all students and prove its unparalleled, unshaken and undiluted commitment to our well-being.

We must now pause and ask ourselves these three fundamental questions: What were our universities designed to do in the first place? Are they doing those things to our satisfaction today? And if not, why not? Let us admit it: We do have serious problems on our hands. The longer we postpone our confrontation with the reality, the more difficult it will be to tackle.

With the elections fast approaching, suddenly, you now need the support of our dear students whose tuition fee was increased without compassionate consideration.

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, is universally acknowledged to be a center of excellence, an institution reserved only for the best and the brightest in Nigeria. In the past two years of your administration, the 21st century university tuition was increased over 500 percent, same as Ondo state School of Science and Technology, Okitipupa and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo. Little wonder why, in the last two years of the administration you lead, our tertiary institutions of learning have been guided by the pursuit of equity; not excellence but a heavy dose of mediocrity.

May I also inform you, Mr. Governor, the NAOSS National President, all the stakeholders involved in the grand move to trade us off and the active players in the plans by NAOSS to organize a rally to declare the support of Ondo state students to the governor, to shelve their plans for now and halt all the processes. NANS JCC, Ondo Axis, would not be a part to the rally and will do all, at its disposal, to stop the proposed rally.

We are the face of all Nigerian students and we will not, for our own comfort and pockets, abandon them in this time of struggle to emancipate us, build educational legacies and open our classrooms back for us to study
Signed:
