Teachers’ sack: El-Rufai replies critics [VIDEO]

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has defended his stand on sack of over 20,000 teachers in Kaduna.

El-Rufai on Thursday through a video shared on his Facebook page said the educational reform was to ensure quality education for children, not against teachers and civil servants.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers had on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike over the sack of about 22,000 teachers by the state government.

El-Rufai in the video explained that his intention was to give children of the poor the same quality education as those of the rich in the state.

According to him, public education saved him from being an illiterate.
He said, “I started life in rural Daudawa as the son of a pensioner. Without public education, I would not have gone to school.

“I believe that the children of the poor are entitled to the same opportunities that I was given.

“Therefore, we have a mission to provide ordinary people and their offspring sustainable ladder for social mobility.

“Our purpose in government is to promote equality of opportunity, to give every child the best prospects through decent education.

“It is to secure for our young people employment opportunities in a vibrant economy regulated by competent public service.

“It is about giving everyone a fair chance in the race of life! It is about being for the people and seeking to empower them, not creating and exploiting dependency,” he said.
