Members and leaders of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have staged peaceful rally across the headquarters of the 18 Council area in Ondo State to get support of key stakeholders for the approval and entrenchment of Local Government autonomy into the Nation’s 1999 Constitution.
The NULGE members took their campaign for autonomy to state lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious and political leaders as well as market squares.
The Union said there is no going back on its stand on autonomy.
It said it is imperative for the State House of Assembly to give premium to the autonomy bill when transmitted to it for concurrence.
The autonomy bill which recently got the nod of the National Assembly needs concurrence from two third of the States House of Assembly before it finally sails through.
NULGE in the sunshine State held rallies across the state to create awareness and sensitize the people on the imperative of autonomy.
In Akure South, the local government workers marched round the town chanting solidarity song and climaxed the procession at the Deji of Akure’s palace.
Addressing the NULGE members, the chief of staff to the Deji of Akure, Prince Adetoyinbo Owolabi assured them of the monarch’s total support for local government autonomy.
In Akure North, the local government workers led by the state Public Relations Officer, Com. Victor Omodara had special prayers before visiting the palaces of the Okiti of Iju, Ogbolu of Itaogbolu, Oloba of Oba ile.
Both the Akure South Chairman, Prince Adekola Adesida and the state PRO, Comrade Omodara expressed regret over what they called deplorable state of local government in Nigeria saying the Union will not rest until it gets autonomy.
In Okitipupa, the workers led by the NULGE Chairman, Comrade Temiyemi visited the popular caring heart market to drum support for local government autonomy.
