The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo says the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) has recorded much success in the sustenance of the national unity, integration and economic development of the country.
Prof. Osinbajo, stated this while addressing the 2017 Batch A Stream 11 corps members posted to Ondo state during their swearing-in ceremony marking the beginning of the orientation course at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Ikare Akoko.
He explained that the NYSC scheme has exposed millions of youths to the culture and tradition of the pluralistic society and has remained relevant since its establishment about forty three years ago.
Osinbajo, who was represented by the Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, said the country acknowledged and appreciated the significant task of the scheme especially during the conduct of election, census, national health and immunization campaign, adding that it demonstrates what the youth can do given the opportunity and challenges.
The Acting President, who charged the corps members to uphold the ideals of the scheme and remain conscientious in the discharge of their assignment, challenged them to key into the recently launched program of the Federal Government “Change Begins With Me” aimed at restoring national values and upholding all that is right.
He said the present administration was aware of the challenges that face the NYSC such as security, deployment management and processes and equally assured of the continued cooperation of the federal government with the state and local governments to ensure the smooth and effective operations relating to the scheme.
Also speaking, the acting chairman NYSC Governing Board, who is also the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports in the state , Pastor Gbenga Adelayi, assured the corps members that the board would ensure that they are posted to areas where their services are mostly needed in line with posting policy.
Earlier in his address, the Ondo State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr. Sunday Robert Aroni, pleaded with the governor to encourage the 18 local government areas in the state to make their impact felt in the camp by erecting structures to ease accommodation problem faced in the camp by corps members and officials.
The State Coordinator, who commended prospective corps members for their eagerness and readiness to serve their fatherland, intimated them that the orientation time-table is loaded with programs and activities that are mandatory for all participating corps members.
He, therefore, warned them to comport themselves in a disciplined and orderly manner for a successful orientation exercise.
A total of 1880 corps members comprising 1417 males and 465 females reported for camp activities in the state.
