Pupil returns lost purse, gets N2,000 reward

For returning a purse containing N 18 , 000 and other documents to a branch of the First City Monument Bank, a pupil of Muslim High School, Sagamu , Ogun State, Labake Samson , has been rewarded with a commendation letter by the management of the bank .

She was also rewarded with N 2 ,000 by the owner of the purse and N 1 ,000 each from other three people for her honesty .

The 19 - year - old , who spoke with our correspondent in a telephone interview on Thursday, said she was on her way home from school last week when she sighted a purse at the Isale Oko area of Sagamu .

“I picked the purse , checked it and saw N 18 ,000 and an FCMB automated teller machine card , among other documents . I took the purse to the Sagamu branch of the bank and asked the officials to call the owner of the purse. I was surprised when a manager at the bank and the owner of the purse later came to my school to give me a commendation letter and N 2 , 000 respectively. ’’

Samson who lost her father when she was five years , said she was not tempted to keep the purse despite her financial challenges.

“Things are really hard but my mother must never hear that I stole anything. She has always told us to be God- fearing , honest and contented. It did not even cross my mind to steal the purse though I need a new school uniform , sandals and textbooks . My mother said she believed that God would take control ,” she said.

Speaking to our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday, the Head of Communications, FCMB , Mr . Diran Olojo , said the bank would soon announce a reward for Samson .

“The girl should definitely be celebrated. No doubt about that at all . What she did is extremely commendable considering the challenges in the country . We will ensure we reinforce the message to her and her peers that she did the right thing . ”
