Former France , Arsenal and Real Madrid striker Nicolas Anelka is joining Dutch first division side Roda JC as a consultant, the struggling club said on Wednesday .
“ Roda JC has reached a deal with Nicolas Anelka to join as a consultant, ” the second from bottom Eredivisie club said .
Anelka, 37, “ will arrive this week and start beefing up the club at once , ” Roda said in a statement .
The appointment comes in the wake of last week’ s announcement that Russian -Swiss investor Aleksei Korotaev has bought a minority share in the club .
Roda did not say how much Korotaev had invested , but local Dutch media reported that it amounted to “ millions ” of euros.
“ Korotaev has big plans with the club . He wants to bring Roda back to the top of the Eredivisie , ” influential financial daily Financieel Dagblad said .
“ Anelka will focus on the football academy. What exactly he’ ll be doing will be discussed in the coming few weeks, ” the club said .
He will also act “ as an advisor for Roda JC in the French football market, ” it added .
Anelka played 69 times at international level and turned out for several prestigious clubs such as Paris Saint -Germain , Liverpool, Chelsea , Manchester City and Fenerbahce.
He will also be remembered for being sent home from the 2010 World Cup after reportedly insulting coach Raymond Domenech at half - time in a defeat to Mexico.
The French players refused to train in protest at their team-mate’ s expulsion, but Les Bleus were promptly eliminated in the group stage anyway .
Several of them along with Anelka were punished afterwards, the striker seeing his international career pretty much ending with an 18- game ban.
