ON FeWorried by what they described as insensitivity of the leadership of Delta House of Assembly to their plight, the Assembly workers have resumed their strike action, demanding for the payment of their wardrobe allowances and appointment of a Deputy Clerk.
The workers, under the aegis of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, Delta State chapter, barricaded the gates to the Assembly Complex, thereby, preventing the state legislators from gaining access to their offices.
The workers had, late last year, suspended their strike action after purportedly reaching an agreement with the leadership of the House on their demands.
Chairman of the Association, Mr Emmanuel Edozie, said: “We had to resume the suspended strike action because the Assembly leadership has failed to fulfil the promises they made to us
“We want them to pay us our 2016 wardrobe allowance and appoint a Deputy Clerk for us. That position has been vacant since 2015. It has created a vacuum. We are being stagnated in our career in the Assembly Service Commission.
“None of the promises made has been fulfilled. The staff clinic, as we talk now is dead. There are no drugs, this is despite the promises made.
“We had suspended the strike because we thought they were sincere. But up till now, the money has not been paid, the issue of Deputy Clerk has not been resolved. We have communicated our resolution to resume the suspended strike to the leadership of the Assembly.
“We are surprised at the attitude of the leadership of the Assembly. They refused to dialogue with the workers’ union despite several efforts made to engage them. They ignored us, saying that they are not responsible to us.”
He said that while the legislators get their allowances and entitlements with ease, the entitlements of the workers were not of any importance to them. “We are not calling off this strike until our demands are met,” he added.
When contacted for comment, the Speaker of the House, Chief Monday Igbuya, said the leadership of the House was commited to the welfare of the workers, as he condemned those destroying the image of the House leadership.
